International Day Of Happiness

Today is the International Day Of Happiness and it’s celebrated every year on the 20th March. Founded in 2012, the United Nations created the International Day of Happiness in order to achieve two goals:-

1. To establish a set of principles  for addressing the complex, interrelated challenges faced by humankind in the ultimate quest to achieve happiness.

2. To promote, preserve and celebrate that happiness is a universal human right and goal.

"Happiness is neither a frivolity nor a luxury. It is a deep-seated yearning shared by all members of the human family." - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, 2014

Happiness brings about a positive state of mind and when our mind is healthy, our bodies usually follow.  Being happy is essential for our personal wellbeing and for the wellbeing of the communities around us.  But what makes us happy?  We asked our friends and these are the things that bring them happiness.

“Sunshine. Bubble baths. Cuddling my son. Watching my son sleep soundly. Smell of grass. Cup of tea”

“Looking into the eyes of my baby every morning, listening to her little chuckles and just watching her for hour upon hour and just feeling the world is so great!”

“When a child suddenly 'gets it' and lights up…”

“Movement. Silly ness. Filming our 12 days to go video this week was a happiness highlight of this week - we were outside, sun shining, moving and having fun”

“Spontaneous things tend to create more happiness”

“Me. I make me happy ”

“Sunshine. Stroking animals. Being hugged by my husband. Cuddling my children. Seeing my children happy. Flowers. Birds. Achievements”

“Penguins, sunflowers and cuddles. Live is altogether happier with these things in it”

“Remembering that Jesus loves me SO MUCH”

“My children's genuine laughter and a warm bath with plenty of bubbles on a winters night”

“Sunshine, family and chocolate!”

“Watching my agility customers grow with confidence!”

“My kids laughing and playing together, warm sunshine on my face, my friend's young daughter giving me cuddles when I know that she's normally wary of other people, when my favourite song comes on the radio.”

“Time with my precious daughter. Having a client walk in wheezing and walk out breathing freely” .

“Good music, being with my wife, being on stage, feeling loved”

“Planting seeds”

“Cuddles with my babies. Being at the top of a hill on a sunny day. Easing into a bubbly bath. Spending time talking to my parents. Silliness with my sisters. Being told by a student that I've made a difference”

“Sunshine. Dancing. Knowing that things are "all right" - family are doing things that make them happy, no health worries, fed and housed ok. Silliness with friends. Big empty spaces in the great outdoors”

Did you notice that sunshine and children come high on the happiness list!

What is interesting and extremely heartening to note is that virtually all of the things above do not cost anything, they are completely free.  Advertisers and marketeers may do all they can to persuade you that their products are the next best thing, guaranteed to bring you happiness, but actually, well you only have to look at this list to realise that what can make you happy is not going to be found in the shops.

It’s also good to know that what makes people happy is different for everybody.  We all have different perceptions of happiness and there is no right or wrong answer.  I also feel it’s not about being happy all of the time. Crap happens in life, everyone knows that, so if something makes you feel sad, that’s ok to have those feelings too. It’s not about living a Pollyanna existence.

However, if you are finding that negativity is taking over, try a little exercise each evening to find three things that have made you feel good or brought a smile to your face.  If you can’t find anything, have a think about what you are grateful for.   Perhaps the sun shone, or you have a comfy bed to sleep in, or you had a great meal and treated yourself to your favourite food.

We’d love to hear what you makes you happy on this Day Of Happiness. Let us know below.
